Turkili Stuffed Grape Leaves (Yaprak Sarma Konservesi, Yaprak Dolmasi Sarmasi) Our Turkili Stuffed Grape Leaves, also called Dolmas, are made with rice filling, so they are perfect for vegetarian meals. Originating in the Ottoman period, these stuffed grape leaves in Turkish are called "yalancı" which means 'fake', in reference to the ones made with rice instead of meat; other ingredients may consist of pine nuts, shredded carrots, currants or raisins, and spices may include parsley, garlic, onion, and cinnamon, allspice or nutmeg. When serving, a garnish may be lemon wedges, dill and/or yogurt. Stuffed grape leaves are a healthy food, high in dietary fiber, iron and calcium and rich in vitamins A, B6 and C. Dolmas is an extremely popular dish in the Mediterranean and surrounding areas, and quickly becoming popular in the United States as a delicious vegetarian dish when made with the rice and pine nuts.
