Turkish Coffee Cups

Coffee, brewed the Turkish way, is very strong. Consequently, it is served in very small cups, similar to the expresso or demitasse cup. The Turkish coffee cup is called a 'fincan' which means cup, mostly porcelain cup, and holds about 2 ounces of liquid. Many years ago, the Turkish coffee cups didn't have handles and were placed in decorative filigree or bejeweled holders called 'zarf', meaning a sheath or jacket. The zarf or the jackets for the Turkish coffee cups generally reflected the style of the times and sometimes made of silver, copper, brass, carved stone and scented woods. Engraving was a popular decoration on the zarf, as were gemstones and they were mainly manufactured somewhere in the local area. These zarfs are now collector items because they were so beautifully decorative and were considered works of art.
