Sometimes called a hookah or a hookah or shisha, was very popular during the Ottoman Empire from the 17th to the 19th centuries, but saw a fall - off in demand in the Turkish Republic as tobacco - lovers switched to cigarettes. Nargile is becoming very popular both in Turkey and all around the world nowadays with the increase of hookah bars, cafes, and coffee shops openings. Turkish Hookah Nargile There are many old traditions in Turkey, one of these with deep roots is smoking the water pipe. Narghile is the name most commonly used in Turkey ; hookah is most commonly used English word for the water pipe; it is also called shisha in some cultures. In olden days, the smoking of the water pipe became the foundation for a new culture that has endured for many centuries. It was popular for both men and women and virtually has not changed its style for a few hundred years. Smoking the nargile, or the hookah, became an important part of the coffee bar culture. Part of the interesting history and wonderful culture of the hookah comes from its four specific parts, the mouthpiece (Agizlik), the top of the nargile, or hookah (Lule), the tube (Marpuc) and the body that serves as the water reservoir (Govde). The various pieces of the water pipe were designed by special craftsmen and the piece they produced bears their name. Tradition holds that not all tobaccos could be used in the hookah, but darker tobaccos were preferred by the smoker of the nargile. If the tobacco was extremely strong, it was washed before smoking. Special oak charcoal was placed on the top of the tobacco, and only this type was ever used by the experienced nargile smoker. Some smokers preferred to use a cherry or grape in the govde for the entertainment of the movement in the water; others sometimes added juice or rose oil to the water for a special treat of added flavor. Many rituals are said to be associated with the historical smoking of the hookah, or nargile. The smoker disliked the rhythm of the burning charcoal to be disturbed by anyone using their nargile fire to light cigarettes. The host of parties or social events many times offered the pleasure of a hookah to their guests.
