Turkish Apricots
Product Description:

The Apricot has such an awesome flexibility and versatility in that it can be eaten raw , cooked, dried, canned, or frozen, and can be served in endless presentations of both sweet or savory dishes.  In Turkey, the producers also provide what is termed "apricot leather " , which is dried apricot flesh in a flat thin sheet, which can be heated either for use in cooking, or taken cold on a trip to eat  like a healthy snack food.

The Apricot belongs to the Rose family and closely related to plums, peaches, cherries, and almonds. It is a fruit with a pit or seed that develops from self-pollinating flowers. The fruit is round with yellow orange color, firm flesh, sweet and fragrant, but contains little juice and the fruit does not ripen after being picked. The color of the Apricot is a large range, from white to pink, and gray to black, particularly in an area of production between Turkey and Turkestan

Apricots are high in Vitamins A, C and E and contain high potassium. Dried Apricots on the other hand, are very rich in carotenes that the body uses to produce Vitamin A which may lower the risk of some cancers in th respiratory system such as the larynx, esophagus and the lungs. Apricots also supply the body with  potassium, iron, calcium, silicon, phosphorus, and Vitamin C. Actually, o verall, dried apricots have a far greater nutritional value than the fresh ones because all the nutrients are concentrated.

Cooking Apricots dissolves the pectin, softening the fruit. The colour does not change nor does the Vitamin A content as carotenes are impervious to heat. The dried fruit of Apricots is expensive because it takes five pounds of fresh apricots to produces only one pound of dried; and, since drying removes only the water, the nutrient qualties remain relatively the same. Ounce for ounce, dried apricots, compared to the fresh, have twelve times the iron, seven times the fiber, and five times the Vitamin A.

Try some of our Turkish Apricots , steam them, and eat along with our Plain or Pistachio Halva on crackers, bread or toast for a rare breakfast treat!
